What interior painting costs
Interior painting is priced by the room, with the prep spelled out. A DC common hallway painted by a two person crew ran $250 in labor this September, with three gallons of paint billed at $130 on the materials line. Whole units and multiple rooms are quoted as one job.

What moves the price
- Prep is the first line. A wall with twenty nail holes and a few cracks takes an hour before the first coat, and the estimate says so.
- Color changes cost a coat. Going from a dark color to a light one, or the other way, is three coats, and we say that up front.
- Trim and ceilings are separate lines. Walls only is the cheapest version of a room. Walls, ceiling and trim is the full job.
- Paint is on its own line. Bring your own cans or pick from the fan deck and we buy it, with the receipt on the invoice.

Cost questions
- Do you move furniture?
- We move it to the middle of the room and cover it. Emptying a room before we arrive saves time and the estimate reflects that.
- Which paint do you use?
- Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore, in the line that fits the room. Rentals get a scrubbable eggshell. Ceilings get flat. Trim gets a water based semigloss that does not yellow.
- How many coats?
- Two on every wall, every time. A big color change gets three. One coat paint is a label, not a method.
How the work itself goes is on the interior painting page.
