What exterior painting costs

Exterior work is priced by the piece, with the prep listed. A front door repainted in Annapolis, with a closet door rehung on the same visit, ran $150 in August. Whole house exteriors get a written quote after a walk around with a ladder.

What moves the price

  • Scraping is the cost. Paint that is holding gets washed and painted. Paint that is peeling gets scraped, sanded and primed, and that is most of the hours.
  • Height changes the setup. Second story fascia needs ladders and a second person, and a steep yard adds staging.
  • Rot gets fixed first. A rotted sill or fascia board is replaced before paint, and that is its own line on the estimate.
  • Weather sets the schedule. Exterior paint needs dry days above 50 degrees, so spring through fall is the season and we book around rain.

Cost questions

Can you match the existing color?
Yes. A chip from a shutter or a piece of trim goes to the store and comes back matched. Sun faded colors sometimes mean painting the whole run so the new section is not brighter than the rest.
Do you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, with a vinyl safe paint in a color no darker than the original. Darker colors can warp vinyl in summer sun, so we say no to those.
How long does a front door take?
One day, two visits a few hours apart so the first coat sets. Doors are painted in place or pulled and laid flat, depending on the finish you want.

How the work itself goes is on the exterior painting page.
